More About Me

Currently...
I am a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee pursing a PhD in English - Creative Writing. A lot of my time is taken up writing speculative fiction (which means my stories feature some fantastic element that doesn't jive with reality, including but not limited to science fiction and fantasy) but I write non-fiction as well. I've published a handful of short stories and, of course, have a novel underway.

I attended the Clarion 2004 Writers Workshop in East Lansing, Michigan on the MSU campus and learned a great deal about the craft of fiction writing. To read more about my writing and my Clarion experience, click the 'Writing' link in the menu to the right.

Intellectual Interests/Pursuits

Most of my reading (and writing) involves mythology, legends, and folktales from around the world, especially Greek and Norse myths. As an undergraduate, I minored in history and philosophy and took courses with an emphasis on religion, focusing on how a culture's spiritual beliefs manifest themselves in their stories. Joseph Campbell knew what he was talking about when he called mythology "the song of the universe."

While I am trying to read more books and stories written in the last two decades, I am currently drawn to northern European stuff like the Icelandic Sagas, the Kalevala, and Beowulf. I went through a serious Greek phase a few years back and devoured all the extant Greek Tragedies, and I have an irresistable compulsion to read The Iliad at least once every two years.

I recently found an interest in Native American myth as well as early American folktales and folk music that deal with quasi-historical characters like John Henry, Stagger Lee, and Paul Bunyan.

I also am a self-professed J.R.R. Tolkien nut, as I believe his works are a perfect example of a modern mythology springing from an unwavering religious belief system. I am also in the minority who prefer The Silmarillion to The Lord of the Rings.

Other Hobbies

I am an outdoors kind of guy. My wife and I frequently go hiking, backpacking, camping, and paddling and we both enjoy sailing.

I've backpacked all over the place in a variety of terrains and seasons. Click on the 'Pictures' link in the menu to the right for images from some of these excursions.

Klinsmann with Spurs
I am an absolute soccer fanatic and religiously follow Major League Soccer, the English Premier League, and Spain's La Liga. As an impressionble youth, I started supporting London's Tottenham Hotspur after seeing Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne play in the 1990 World Cup. Spurs won the F.A. Cup the following year and its been a steady decline into mediocrity ever since, except for the brief spike of elation when Spurs managed to sign Jurgen Klinsmann (left.) Twice.

On these shores, I am a supporter and former season ticket holder for the Chicago Fire and root for the league overall. I am invested emotionally in the US National Team to a degree that is not healthy. I blog regularly on all things soccer, which has a link in the menu bar.

American football is a violent sport for drunken louts, which I occasionally am. I love my Green Bay Packers and don't you dare doubt my street cred - I grew up in G.B., lived off Packerland Ave. and went to Vince Lombardi Middle School, thank you very much. I also have a piece of turf from Lambeau Field the season they won Super Bowl XXXI.

I live one mile west of Camp Randall, home of the Wisconsin Badgers football team who I believe are constantly overrated when they're not good, and underrated when they are.

A Brief History of the Rest of My World
I was born in Portland, Oregon in 1974 but raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin from age four to nineteen. I went to the University of Wisconsin- Madison from 1992 to 1996, emerging with my BA in English. I received my MA in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in August of 2007.

Moved to Chicago after college and got a job with the United States Soccer Federation in their memebership department. I mostly worked with youth and amateur state associations and the professional leagues, and ran the U.S. Open Cup, the United States' equivalent of the English F.A. Cup, a tournament open to every team in the nation

After three years with U.S. Soccer, I sought greener pastures and moved out to Seattle, Washington and took a job with Washington State Youth Soccer Association, one of the largest youth soccer organizations in the country.

We stayed in Seattle for almost four years, enjoying the great outdoors just a few hours down the road but ultimately decided we decided to move back to Madison, the place where we first met. I also decided that it was high time I devote my time and energy to my first love, writing.

I attended the 2004 Clarion Writers Workshop in East Lansing, MI and have since had several pro publications. I am currently a Ph.D. student in Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee.
