Xela

We arrived in Xela Saturday afternoon, which maybe wasn't the best time. School didn't start until Monday morning which meant we were on our own for the first couple days. Navigating new cities is part of the fun of traveling and, after receiving assurances that the local footie match would neither be violent or dangerous* for an extrañero (foreigner), we bought a couple tickets for about $8 US each. Of course, I also picked up a replica jersey. You can just about make out the stadium and vendor stalls across the street behind me.

* Normally, I would say that a typical footie match is no more dangerous than a typical American football match, however, I did have a worst-case scenario at a footie match in Brazil between Internacional and Gremio, cross-town rivals. They hate each other with a passion and share a common dislike for all things American--including Americans. It's a long story, but one that ends with riot police swinging truncheons and a few moments of blind panic. Let's just say I wasn't eager to repeat the experience, especially with Amy along.
