Alentejo

If I had to pick my favorite spot in Portugal it would be the Alentejo, the name of the region directly east of Lisbon
. The pace of life seems slower here, the towns with neither big nor touristy, and the region isn't as populated. It seemed like you couldn't drive more than a few kilometers in the northern part of the country before hitting another town, but in the Alentejo there's room to breathe.

The old cliche' "a picture doesn't to it justice" has never been more true. Frankly, I'm rather disappointed in this photo set as the pictures just don't convey how remarkable this region is. The medieval castles on top of each hillside served as outposts against Spanish encroachment over the border and we explored a number of them.
