Évora

Évora is the heart of the Alentejo region of Portugal, which is due east of Lisbon and stretches to the Spanish border. We spent some time touring the Alentejo but that's in the next photo set.

We stayed in Évora two nights. It was similar to Óbidos in that it was a medieval fortified city, and similar to Coimbra in that it housed a largish university. We mostly strolled the narrow streets and did our best to avoid the touristy shops that ringed the main square.

We also toured the surrounding area which features a number of megaliths--stone structures similar to Stonehenge. This gave us an opportunity to stretch our legs in the beautiful countryside, too.
