One of the things I like about Madrid is that there are very few must-see tourist sites (the Plaza Mayor, the palace, the Prado) but strolling around you encounter lots of interesting things and public works of art. Take these buildings for example: the one on the left is "decorated" with rust, and the one of the right has a living garden growing on the wall.
