We entered California at Crescent City and Redwoods National Park. As expected, we spent most of the day wandering through the park and the connected state parts in the rain. We were surprised, though, to find that the Avenue of the Giants, just south of Eureka, was the highlight of the trip. The trees were in closer proximity to one another and there was less underbrush, which helped emphasize the enormity of the redwoods.

We ended up taking Hwy 1 the rest of the way to San Francisco, following the coast the whole way. The trip to Fort Bragg, where the beach actually starts, was a bit dark and harrowing, but it way a gorgeous, sunny drive down the rest of the coast
