Spam B-Gone?

Wow. I installed the Akismet plugin for combatting comment spam and in the last 24 hours it has stopped 86 would-be spam messages from being posted to my blog, and has been 100% accurate. If you use WordPress for your blogging software, install Akismet.

Fashion Show

I almost forgot to mention one of the best parts of the UHR: showing off your new clothes. Let’s take a quick look back at some of the edgy fashions I’ve displayed over the years at our group’s annual backpacking trip: 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 In case you’re wondering, yes that’s the same [...]

Randomosity

‘Tis the season for comment spam? I’ve been getting pummeled with about 100 or more a day. Spam filters catch about half which leaves me with the manual mass edit mode, so if I’ve accidentally deleted a pithy comment you made, my apologies. Received my materials from Bilingual America so I can start learning Spanish. [...]

Memed!

I got beaned by John Joseph Adams (aka the Slush God) to do the book meme doing the rounds on the blogosphere. Here it goes: 1. One book that changed your life? I read Catcher in the Rye sometime in my sophomore or junior year of high school and it really opened my eyes. I [...]

Home Safe and Mostly Sound

UHR 2006 ended as a complete success. People who think that the midwest is flat, brown, and boring really don’t know what they’re talking about. The Superior Hiking Trail, which begins just north of Duluth and stretches 200 miles to the Canadian border, is a great example of the beauty of this part of the [...]

All That’s Left is the 8 Hour Drive

UHR 2006 is a go. Buddy Jed and I leave Madison at 5:00 and should be meeting Brothers Todd and Troy somewheres around Duluth at 11:00 or so, then another 90 minutes north. Here’s a gander at the trail and elevation profile. Click on them for a larger view: From start to finish we’ll have [...]

Back to Work…For Three Days

Rambling post edited for clarity, 4:15 pm In what must seem like a whirlwind of activity for yours truly, I no sooner get back from South Carolina before I leave again, this time north to Duluth and beyond for four days of backpacking bliss on the Superior Hiking Trail. I leave Wednesday night. More on [...]

Safe at Home!

We drove for 15.5 consecutive hours yesterday, stopping only to gas up the car and take bathroom breaks. We didn’t even stop to eat as we brought food for the trip. Would I recommend such a thing? Maybe. We’re glad we didn’t have to spend money on a hotel room but our legs are pretty [...]

Another Approach

I was on vacation when the whole issue of the lack of women in F&SF came up the first time ’round and the topic has come up again as the slush bomb is nearly upon us, and again I’m late on this because I’m on vacation. My opinion on this, not that anyone asked, is [...]
