Honestly Andy, Modern Guilt isn't his best work. It's good, but uneven. I rank his albums in this order:

1) Odelay!
2) Guero
3) Sea Change
4) Mutations
5) The Information
6) Modern Guilt
7) Midnite Vultures
8) Mellow Gold
9) One Foot in the Grave

The top four are some of my favorite albums of all time, never mind my favorite Beck albums of all time. Like Dylan, his best work is so stupidly good that stuff like The Information, Modern Guilt, and Midnite Vultures are all very good albums in their own right but suffer in comparison.

Even One Foot in the Grave, which I ranked last here, is still quite good. The only reason I rate this one lower is because it's a collection of folksy tunes and more one-dimensional than the variety you get with Odelay! or Guero.

Glad you're getting into him though. He's an artist well worthy of your attention.
