The Ringer

I was invited to play on an indoor co-ed team by one of the guys I play fall soccer with and had my first game last night. I found out that the first game, which I had missed, they had lost 10-2. Last night’s result with me in the squad? That’s right. 11-2.

The problems were pretty evident, the biggest being that this isn’t an over-30 co-ed league and there’s a huge difference between 26 and being in your mid-to-late 30′s. I’m turning 35 in January and was the second-youngest on our team. The second-biggest problem was conditioning and, to a lesser extent, possession. When you don’t have the ball you need to run a lot more, and running a lot more makes you tired. When you’re playing against teams a decade younger than you, you need to do your best to hand onto the ball. Even though I’m making my observations based on 60 minutes of soccer, that’s my assessment of why this team has shipped 21 goals and scored 4. It’s still good exercise though.

We had our 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM portfolio review session yesterday and it was not fun, but at least it’s over. I appealed a couple decisions and once I hear back on Monday whether they were upheld or overturned, I can send out fail letters and submit grades. Then I’ll be done with 101 for the semester.

I’m within touching distance of finishing my final paper and then it’s almost home-free. I think I’m taking the rest of today off and I’ll hammer through it tomorrow. I’m exhausted and I feel like stopping right now, but that ain’t gonna happen. I like sleep. (sigh)

I watched Tottenham against Man Ure today and thought it was a good end-to-end match. Man Ure had most of the possession and looked more dangerous but Spurs never went away and had several good moves themselves. I also watched the second half of Man City and Everton and it was so-so.

You might expect me to point out that brilliant, youthful Ar*nal drew 1-1 with mighty Middlesbrough today, providing more proof that this team is well out of the title race, especially when the teams above them stalled out. But I’m tired of pointing out the obvious.

I watched UFC’s Fight for the Troops the other night and holy crap there were some big time knock outs. Koscheck’s KO of Yoshida? Cue the tweety birds at about 2:10 of that clip. My god, I hope that never happens to me.

That is where the term “get your clock cleaned” originated. Ouch!

I’m watching the lead up to the UFC finale right now! This idiot (Junie) is like a retard! His “I’m the tough guy persona” gets a little old. Plus, he just got his butt kicked. I guess things do work out the way they are supposed to!

    Random question:

What does it mean when you get non-form rejection letters from places that you really want to be published in? Today, I received two of the most amazing rejection letters ever. I am almost happy I was rejected because I felt so uplifted after receiving these letters. Odd…

Dad, that’s for sure! There’s an upper division and a lower division, and methinks we’re playing in the wrong one. Junie Browning is a head case. I can’t believe they’re letting him fight one of the preliminary fights during the finale, but as I’ve thought for a few seasons now, in order for that show to be good television they need stupid guys to do stupid things.

Sarah, generally that means that you made it past the first reader to the editor(s) for consideration. If they gave you advice, think about what they when you send a story to them again. It’s a very good sign indeed but also keep your expectations in check; I’ve been getting personal rejections from one or two places for a few years now, always with encouraging “try again” messages but I just can’t seem to seal the deal. Still, if you’re getting past the first reader then you must be doing something right. Keep at it!
