I ended up springing for an iPod touch to make up for my ruined Blackberry Curve. I placed it on the back of the car last weekend and forgot to retrieve it before we took off. I know it flew off the trunk at about 35-40 mph, and I’m guessing a car behind us ran it over. We brought it to a cell store but it was declared dead once he opened it up and got a look inside. Now I’ve got a crummy flip phone, but it serves me right. (sigh)
My problem is that I really need the contacts and calendar function for the Curve. I am relatively spacey when it comes to remembering most things, and at the moment I need to remember a lot of things. Besides, I fell in love with our friend Jenny’s iPod touch awhile back and have been coveting one. Had money been no option, we would have sprung for an iPhone but the $80/mo plus the upfront hardware cost plus my awful track record with cell phones… well, it just wasn’t on the cards.
After a day of futzing, I finally figured out how to sync my Google calendar with the native iPod touch calendar (hooray!) and my Google contacts with my ipod touch contacts (hooray!). However, I’m waiting for the chance to actually use some of the features, especially the mapping. Incredibly, it works pretty much like it does in the commercials—your location is already locked and then you type in “sushi” or “comic book stores” and they appear on the map. You touch one, then touch directions, and you get a turn-by-turn breakdown of how to get there. Amazing.
Another things that intrigues me is the ability to read Kindle books on the device. I used to read on my iPaq back when I had one through work, but I never got into the habit on my Blackberry. This screen is a little easier on the eyes, so we’ll have to see how it goes.
Overall, I’m happy with it, although right off the bat I understand the allure of the iPhone. The second you’re out of WiFi range, the ipod Touch pretty much becomes an MP3 player with your contacts and calendar in it. All the cool apps, like the ones that connect you to the weather, Wikipedia, and whatnot, don’t work. Still, I’m happy with what I’ve got. I figure I’ll mostly be using it at home and at school, where WiFi is coming out your ears.
